Exciting Time for the Future of Herman Avenue Second Graders
Auburn, NY It is that time of year again for the visit from Herman Ave 2nd Grade Class to see what Auburn has to offer in technology at local manufacturer Currier Plastics. “Herman Avenue second graders have been visiting Currier Plastics for about 15 years now,” said John Currier, President of Currier Plastics, “and my son Tim was in one of the first classes to visit. He now works in our maintenance department.” The event will be held on June 10th from 9am till 11:30am.
To make this event successful, Erin LaFleur, event organizer for over 9 years, has recruited the Currier employees to help out. “I was able to get at least one volunteer from each department to be tour guides so that all the kids can understand what we do here and how they might one day come to work at a place like Currier Plastics.” Erin added,” It’s a great time and a worthwhile experience.”
On the plant tour, the employees of Currier Plastics hope to inspire the young visitors to grow up, get a good education and pursue a career in local manufacturing. The students will learn how the products they see and use everyday are made from plastics. On their tour of the molding areas, the children will see how bottles, canisters and their matching lids are made. They will also get to visit the Quality Lab to see how science and math are used to measure and test the same bottles and lids they just saw made.
In the Business Development Design Department, they will see the CAD Designer, Larry Jedik, use a 3D laser scanner to reverse engineer new products. “It’s our opportunity to give back to the community and if we inspire a couple of kids to stay in school and get a good education, then we’ve done our part,” said Gary Kieffer, VP of New Product Development and one of this years tour guides.
As an added bonus, Tim Currier will have his race car on site. John Currier told us, “My son Tim is currently in 9th place in points in his division of the modified dirt racing circuit. The average lap speed is around 100 mph and when the kids visit Currier and get to see the race car up close- they go nuts!”
Currier Plastics opened in 1982 and is located in Auburn, New York and is the recipient of the 2010 Economic Champion by the CenterState Corporation for Economic Opportunity and the 2009 winner of the Association for Manufacturing Excellence award.
