Quality Engineering Manager

JOB SUMMARY:

The Quality Assurance Manager is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining individual quality plans for each part to ensure they meet customer expectations.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

40% — Plan, coordinate, implement, and direct Quality Assurance Programs designed to ensure manufacture of products consistent with customer standards including, but not limited to:

  • Determining Customer requirements pertaining to new and existing parts via Advance Product Quality Planning and interface with Business Development, Design Engineering and Molding Engineering.
  • Developing control plans to translate and monitor the customer requirements and process performance characteristics into specific measurement and inspection criteria that ensure requirements are met and documented.
  • Devise and implement various complex methods and procedures for inspecting, testing, and evaluating the precision, reliability, and accuracy of products, processes, and production equipment.
  • Developing and establishing advanced quality systems and procedures, inspection plans, quality performance trends, statistical plans, cost estimates, and technical quality plans to execute the control plans.
  • Maintaining or establishing appropriate metrics to facilitate and identify key contributors to quality system and document metric performance.
  • Identifying, investigating and resolving quality-related problems with products and processes, working inter-departmentally, to determine cause, recommend corrective action, and implement necessary modifications to system to eliminate problems.
  • Making specific recommendations based on quality system needs; and
  • Identifying and managing quality improvement projects, non-conformance reduction, and cost savings initiatives as well as improving manufacturing, quality, and documentation systems.

30% — Provide support and guidance to all manufacturing processes to ensure that project and/or process controls are compliant with customer requirements including, but not limited to:

  • Establishing and maintaining contact with customer to determine quality, regulatory, & statutory requirements.
  • Providing input on quality to product development teams and recommending production improvements through data driven evaluations and by applying continuous improvement principles and techniques to critical areas of production.
  • Guiding technical evaluations, analysis, and related data acquisition processes to ensure quality objectives are achieved.
  • Maintaining and directing the organization’s quality control activities which include Inspection and test of product.
  • Producing audits and disposition.
  • Day-to-day quality decisions for quality of product on the manufacturing floor, including warehouse audits.
  • Responding to inquiries or complaints from customers.
  • Initiating corrective actions and preventive actions to improve customer satisfaction.

10% — Develop and maintain a Quality Assurance Reporting structure including, but not limited to:

  • Preparing comprehensive reports by collecting, interpreting, analyzing, and summarizing data and making recommendations.
  • Analyzing proposed changes in methods and materials.
  • Compiling and writing training material and Using statistical and analytical methods to assess the cost of, and determine the responsibility for, products or materials that do not meet required standards and specifications. Developing process and system improvements to reduce failure costs to achieve goals.

10% — Continue to improve the capabilities of the department by investigating new technologies and keep current with industry developments.

10% — Apply project management skills to ensure efficient utilization of Quality Assurance Department resources.  Maintain the department budget, adequate staffing levels and equipment.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:

  • Contribute to the overall success of the company by performing all assigned duties in a professional, timely, and accurate manner.
  • Promote the Quality Improvement Process.
  • Ability to assess and implement continuous improvement techniques to quality and manufacturing functions.
  • Ability to work on a variety of problems of diverse scope and complexity where analysis and evaluation of various outcomes require tradeoffs and negotiation.
  • Ability to solve a wide range of difficult problems and evaluate alternative solutions which require coordination, communication and presenting information to cross-functional teams and top management.
  • Ability to apply state-of-the-art inspection and quality engineering/assurance techniques, procedures, instruments, equipment, theories, principles and concepts and general business operations.

QUALIFICATION STANDARDS:

Four-year degree in engineering, science, or math, Five years supervisory/management experience, as well as two years in the field of quality.  Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Directly supervise Quality Technicians, Quality Engineers, and Associate Engineer.  Provide supervision in areas such as hiring, firing and promotion decisions; assign, schedule and check work; instruct in methods; conduct performance evaluations and recommend salary adjustments.

MENTAL AND VISUAL REQUIREMENTS:

Close mental and visual attention required to perform work dealing primarily with problem solving, investigation and analysis, measuring components, analyzing complex relationships, preparing and analyzing data and figures, performing engineering work, using computer terminal, AND/OR extensive reading.  Able to differentiate between minor variations of shades of colors.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES AND REQUIREMENTS:

Light work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arms and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for Sedentary Work and the employee sits most of the time, the job is rated for Light Work

Ability to it, stand, walk, talk and hear.  Ability to Climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, use fingers.  Ability to pull, push and lift objects.  Ability to grasp, feel and perform repetitive motions.

EQUIPMENT USED:

Ability to use quality control measurement devices such as: video & XYZ coordinate measuring equipment, vernier calipers, micrometers and other various gages.  Ability to use general office equipment and computers with advanced capabilities using Microsoft Excel, Word, Access or SPC software program and general office equipment.

 SAFETY, PROTECTIVE CLOTHING AND GEAR REQUIREMENTS:

 Safety requirements for this position include but are not limited to eye protection when on the production floor and in the tool room.  Employees must follow any additional safety requirements as posted in specific job areas.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

The employee is subject to inside environmental conditions: Protection from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS:

 Ability to read, analyze and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents.  Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from clients, regulatory agencies, or members of the general public.  Ability to effectively present information to top management of own organization or outside organizations.

 MATH SKILLS:

 Ability to perform all mathematic calculations in any unit of measure, using whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.  Ability to perform complex engineering calculations.  Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra, plane and solid geometry, trigonometry, and calculus, probability and statistical inference.  Ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, sampling theory, and factor analysis.  Ability to create graphs to graphically display data.
