Breaking the Mold with Lindsay Cronkright of Currier Plastics

Lindsay CronkrightAuburn, NY   Plastics News recently held a conference in Nashville, Tennessee titled Women Breaking the Mold.  This conference aims to develop and support the professional growth of females in the plastics industry.  Speakers shared their experiences that helped them get to their positions of leadership and included Lindsay Cronkright, Currier Plastics’ Director of Finance and IT.

Cronkright volunteered to speak on “Gender Dynamics – What you say and how you say it matters.”  Her presentation highlighted the differences in how men and women communicate. Cronkright shared her personal strategy for understanding the language differences of her male counterparts and advises young professionals to be cognizant of the differences.  Cronkright believes that mentoring men and women on how our behavior and communication can easily be misinterpreted helps to avoid gender communication issues.

Cronkright’s focus on gender dynamics comes natural: “I live it every week day!  I continuously focus on my choice of words and body language.  Would I do the same in a female-dominated workplace?  I don’t know.  But I do know that, over the course of 10+ years working in manufacturing environments, I’ve learned how to adapt.  I’ve learned to carefully to craft my communication style, whether it be verbal, postural, or written.  Doing so has contributed to my professional advancement.  I hope that, by sharing my experiences, I empower other women.”

Proudly Received MAPP’s Annual Safety Best Practices Competition

Auburn, NY Currier Plastics has received the recognition from MAPP (Manufacturing Association for Plastics Processors).  Currier is described by their peers as “world class, state-of-the-art, top echelon, industry leaders, innovative, and superior.”

“Currier Plastics has always had a belief that we need to place value in our employees and create a work environment that is truly a great place to work. As we looked at our core values, we identified Safety as being a place that we could improve. For years, we have tracked key incidents as they have occurred and worked to reduce the total number of recordable and lost time incidents. By the end of 2017, our number of incidents had plateaued, and we decided that it was time to reevaluate our system and develop a plan. Safety had become something that happened but wasn’t a primary focus,” said Ray McKee, Director of Manufacturing.

Development of the plan was expanded on by McKee. “We needed to create something that wasn’t going to be a flavor of the week or a short-term exercise, we knew that we had to identify some key elements of a comprehensive safety program. We identified focus areas including Leadership, Conditional Based Safety, Behavioral Observation, Communication, Training, Incident Reporting, Recognition, and Continuous Improvement. Within each of these areas, we wanted to focus on how we promote engagement, use data to make decisions, and make safety a part of the conversation within the facility on a day in and day out basis.”

The results spoke for themselves.  Currier Plastics has grown in total employees over the past several years and recently broke their record for longest period of time without a recordable incident (previous record was 233 days), the safety committee is engaged and having the strongest turnout in years, and they have the high level engagement as shown by the 550+ close call/first aid reports that have been submitted since the start of 2019. Their recordable injury rate is on pace to be the lowest in their history, and they continue to make significant improvements to their safety engagement and culture. “We believe that placing the priority on safety that we have is a major part of what makes Currier Plastics a preferred employer as well as a preferred supplier to our customers,” added McKee.

Currier Plastics Honors Memory of Pearl Harbor

Auburn, NY  Currier Plastics will raise an American flag that was previously flown over the USS Missouri last year on December 7th, in recognition of the 77th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.

Michael Cartner, CFO and one of the owners of Currier Plastics purchased the flag while in Hawaii earlier this year while visiting the Pearl Harbor Memorial site.  The USS Missouri is perhaps best known as the site of the unconditional surrender by the Japanese to the Allies on September 2, 1945, ending world War II.
The USS Missouri is docked at Pearl Harbor and now a popular tourist attraction and now maintained by the National Park Service with proceeds from daily visitors, donations and partners helping to pay upkeep.  Cartner said he purchased the flag to support the memorial and to keep the history alive.

Currier Plastics hosted the flag raising ceremony Friday morning at 8:15am with Eagle Scouts Tim Walawender and Jason Schmidt raising the flag, and former military members Mike Rojo, Corey Richardson, Pat Hahn and Jason Kelley taking part in the ceremony. Also saluting the flag was a former Vietnam Veteran from the community.

Beta Testing Plastrac’s Blender Process Controllers

Auburn, NY Currier Plastics has agreed to beta test Plastrac’s newest touchscreen controller in a deal made at the NPE Show in Orlando, Florida.

Currier Plastics’ plant manager Steve Salls, negotiated the details with Eric Bullivant the president of Plastrac. “We’ve used Plastrac color blending systems successfully for many years in our injection molding department. When I first took over the IM department several years ago, we were having trouble with the controllers. Eric himself came to Currier Plastics and spent the day training us on how to use and troubleshoot them, so our confidence level is high that we will continue to receive the same service. The new controller by design will make it so the material handlers and technicians will be able to set up and monitor the recipe and delivery of additives such as color or bio much quicker and easier,” said Salls. “We’re looking for any opportunity run more efficiently.”

The Currier team expects to install the first controller within the next 30 days and will share their feedback with the Plastrac engineers. “We think we are going to enjoy having this new control platform on our floor” says Salls. “The current controller we use has 16 buttons and a two-line alphanumeric LCD display. Recipes and updates are via RS232 serial port. The new controller has a touchscreen display with easy to access set-up parameters with a USB interface for recipes and software updates. Plus, we’ll be able to capture any events or alarms with the real time and day stamp.”
